Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built terracotta figure depicting a seated female with a characteristically wide body in a lovely pose with both legs folded beneath her skirt and holding her hands to her knees. The figure is painted in golden brown and white hues with black tattoo-like decorations on her face, breasts, shoulders, and lower back. She presents an expressive visage with wide-open eyes, a pronounced nose, as well as a smiling grin, and is adorned with multiple ear ornaments, a nose ring, and what appears to be a painted pectoral. The sculptor made a point of emphasizing her pointy breasts, a sign of female fertility. A very lively figure, skillfully modeled, displaying wonderful details and a full-of-personality expression created by the ancients of West Mexico. Size: 7.5" W x 9" H (19 cm x 22.9 cm)
