Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A sweet pairing from the Nayarit culture, including a bichrome bowl adorned with a basket weave pattern on the underside and nice manganese blooms and burnishing marks. Complementing this is a petite, seated, nude hunchback, resting his elongated head with an elaborate coiffure upon folded arms which are in turn perched upon his upraised knees. He too is covered with nice manganese blooms. Hunchbacks were understood to be sacred humans whose deformities indicated that they were touched by the gods. Size: 6-3/8" x 2-1/8". Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Belaire, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110041

  • Condition: Surface wear to bowl, else excellent. Both pieces show nice manganese blooms.
