Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A redware seated female with her suckling infant, the mother nicely delineated with an incised coiffure on her characteristically oversized head, her abstract visage comprised of slit eyes and mouth and a pronounced nose, adorned with rather large shell-shaped ear ornaments. Mother and child iconography is relatively rare among the ancients of West Mexico, and in this example, the pairing is particularly intimate as the infant is nursing, emphasizing the maternal nature of the mother. Size: 4.375" W x 8.25" H (11.1 cm x 21 cm)
