Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A skillfully rendered mace head, carved and string-cut from a grey-black stone to create an anthropomorphic effigy figure with a prominent visage comprised of pierced circular eyes, an arched hairline, a prominent nose, an open mouth (oh no Mr. Bill for those who remember),circular pierced marks for ears/cheeks, incised frets over mid-section of front coiffure, a concave neck designed to have leather or sinew bands wrapped around it to attach it to a stick, and a long body tapering to an axe head. The Colima people made ritual objects that reflected their lives. This mace head was clearly designed to be held as a symbol of power or status. Custom stand.
