Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A set of 2 hand-built pottery figures from ancient Mexico depicting mothers with children. The red slipped figure is a Chinesco type standing nude atop a pair of delineated legs with a child upon her back. Her head features a pinched coffee-bean-shaped eyes accentuated nose, and impressed mouth. The other mother with a child on her waist is much more stylized, characteristic of Ixtlan del Rio types, with a square and flattened torso profile, the head features bulging nose and septum piercing and a flared headdress. Size (larger figure): 4" W x 5.5" H (10.2 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
