Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built effigy in the form of a dog that is contentedly reclining with legs outstretched and stomach bulging outward. The raised head, impressed eyes, slightly open mouth, and perky ears suggest an awake but sleepy pup. This dog may have accompanied the deceased in the afterlife to protect and serve, and it is also possible that the rotund companion represented a pregnant mother dog, or a fattened, tasty meal intended to provide the spirit with sustenance. Size: 6.75" L x 3.5" W x 2.75" H (17.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
