Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan Del Rio type, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An impressive pottery male warrior figure seated cross-legged and holding club-shaped weapons in each hand. Depicted nude with a projecting phallus, the figure presents a fierce countenance with gritted teeth, an ornamented nose, and sunken, almond-shaped eyes, all beneath an incised coiffure and a prominent headband. Red, beige, and black paints adorn his body, forming dotted, checkers, and striated patterns on his chest, shoulders, and face. Several earrings line his large ears, while layers of necklaces shroud his neck. A figure like this would have been placed in a shaft tomb to protect the deceased from potential intruders. Size: 6" W x 10.7" H (15.2 cm x 27.2 cm)
