Description:

Native American, Midwestern US, Late Archaic to Early Woodland, ca. 2000 BCE to 500 CE. A nice knapped projectile point that broadens near its base before tapering to a fine, sharp point; the piece has only the suggestion of a stem. The obsidian is opaque and matte black. Obsidian was a prestigious trade good, found as a raw material in regions with a more recent volcanic past - namely, the western United States. The fact that it is found knapped into blades and points in the Midwest speaks to the extensive trade networks that crisscrossed ancient America. The use of such an "exotic" material to make this spear point suggests that it was for special purposes - ritual cutting, or display in a ceremony. Size: 1.4" W x 7.65" H (3.6 cm x 19.4 cm)
