Description:

Stanley R. Hill, also Stan Hill or Stanley Robert Hill (Mohawk, Turtle Clan, 1921-2003). Figure of a man. Bone carving, ca. 1980. Signed "SH" on verso and "Stanley R. Hill" on underside of base. A fascinating bust of a man carved from ungulate bone by Mohawk artist Stanley R. Hill. Supported by dramatically sloped shoulders, the sizable head bears an evocative visage of a heavy brow above heavy-lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent, broad nose that extends from a narrow nasal bridge, and an open mouth of gritting teeth, all surmounted by a short coiffure of straight hair. Size: 1.6" L x 1" W x 3.8" H (4.1 cm x 2.5 cm x 9.7 cm)

According to the Iroquois Museum: "Stanley R. Hill (1921 - 2003) Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan is an internationally exhibited Iroquois sculptor from Six Nations, Ontario. His sculptures are in the permanent collection of several widely recognized museums including the Iroquois Museum, Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, The Iroquois Museum, Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, Rochester Museum and Science Center, and Bolle Museum in France. Stanley Hill discovered his artistic talents when he retired in 1975 from a career as a structural steelworker. Often he represents animals, birds, or wampum belts in his sculpture, and experiments with representing the human face. As a bone sculptor, he sees a link between himself and his forefathers who carved handsome combs and figures as well as household articles from bone. Stan Hill never wasted the materials he was using. He would trade with other Native artists."
