Description:

Native American, North America, southeastern United States, Eastern Woodland culture, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A sturdy hand axe that is carved from dark gray stone and bears a deep groove well around the entire butt end. The acutely angled edge of the axe exhibits an incredibly smooth surface texture that indicates how this tool was perhaps used more for smoothing or shaping wood or softer materials rather than chipping away at softer types of stone. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 5.75" L x 2.8" W (14.6 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, 1980s-2000s
