Description:

North America, Native American, Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 to 1000 CE. A flat thin stone, hand-carved and hand-drilled with two holes through the center to use as a gorget. These stone gorgets were possibly ornamentation to be worn around the necks as symbols of status. It is likely that the holes were drilled from both sides and met in the center, because one borehole is slightly crooked. The stone has lovely dark striations running acroiss the smooth surface. This may have been a river stone polished by Mother Nature before being selected to use as a gorget. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.68" L x 1.5" W (9.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
