Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A seated pottery figure holding a small cup in the palm of one hand. The figure is wearing a loincloth painted with thin lines and with a bulge of coca leaf in his cheek. He sits on some kind of flat bench. The ingestion of coca is associated in ancient South American societies with a transformative state and his face, with its huge, bulging eyes, seems to suggest he is in a trance. Size: 4.2" L x 3.55" W x 7.5" H (10.7 cm x 9 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: ex-Americas Artifacts, Roswell, GA, USA; Ex-Private Georgia Collection; Ex-Steve Kramer, acquired 1970s through early 1980s.
