Pre-Columbian, Colombia to Ecuador (Carchi) region, Narino Highlands, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. An intriguing terracotta figure depicting twin figures with simian visages topped by crested fur (painted black) and wearing a shared skirt and blouse adorned with negative resist red on orange linear motifs, a choker style necklace, and earspools - clothing usually associated with a human figure. This twin monkey-human figure stands upon shared legs and a third support extending from the back. A curious piece indeed, perhaps representing a transformative state, from the Narino peoples. Size: 3.875" H (9.8 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
