Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A vessel with a round bowl upheld by a quadruped - probably a llama - atop a hollow, flared, round base. The bowl may have been used for holding coca, the ubiquitous leaf chewed in Narino society (and many others in South America) to provide stimulation. Fascinatingly, although llamas are not native to Colombia, the Inca brought them there as pack animals fromPeru - perhaps where the artist who made this piece became inspired! Size: 7" W x 6.9" H (17.8 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Tom Francis Collection, Gainesville, Georgia USA, acquired by descent to children; ex-William and Carol Thibadeau Sr., acquired in the 1970s to 1980s
