Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Carchi-Narino, Capuli Complex, ca. 850 to 1500 CE.  A finely built pottery jar depicting a heartwarming maternal pairing comprised of a standing female with pear-shaped body holding a young child to her breast. All surfaces decorated in negative resist pattern. Size: 7-1/2"H x 4-3/4"L.

In Pre-Columbian cultures, women played critical societal roles including raising children, preparing food for the family, maintaining the household, and weaving textiles. In addition to these duties, depending on the region, some women participated in political, economic and religious activities. Archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians continue to peel back the layers toward a better understanding of the Pre-Columbian gender roles, and surviving pottery such as this example provides important clues to the process. Provenance: Ex-private L. Brittan collection, Canada, acquired prior to 1980. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
