Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama / Costa Rica, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. The jar is from the Chiriqui/Diquis regions of bordering Panama/Costa Rica, and has two small modeled figures -- known as appliques or adornos -- symmetrically opposite each other. They depict a transforming zoomorph that seems to be a combination of a fish and a beaked bird like a macaw or parrot. Size: 6-1/4"L x 6-1/4"W x 6-1/5"H.

Provenance: Ex-private Rousseau collection, Durango, CO, acquired before 1984.
