Description:

India, ca. 1936 CE. This is a gorgeous and heavy glass bead necklace made by the Naga culture composed mainly of deep amber colored beads, with primary multi-colored beads at the point that hangs furthest from the neck. At the neck, the many strands go into a woven cloth pattern and then fewer strands of larger red beads. The clasp is joined with a coin with excellent patina - a 1/4 Anna from 1936, bearing the likeness of George V "King + Emperor". The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this necklace was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. During the great ritual occasions in their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including a necklace like this one. Size: 31" L (78.7 cm).
