Description:

Central India, ca. 19th century CE. Heavy cast bronze statue of Ganesha (Ganesh) the 'bringer of good fortune', the elephant headed Hindu deity. He holds a seashell, a broken tusk, a ball of sweets, and a noose in his four raised arms. He is adorned with loose dhoti and conical form crown and has a cobra wrapped around his waist. Each of these items is symbolic: The single tusk indicates his ability to overcome all forms of dualism. The noose is so he can capture and put aside obstacles. The serpent is Vasuki, one of the kings of the nagas (sacred serpents in Hindu and Buddhist mythology). This is a nice representation packed with all of the details that you can expect from Hindu art! Size: 6.4" W x 9.5" H (16.3 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Collection of Albert Shanker, NYC, acquired 1970s.
