Description:

North Africa, Mauritania, Mousterian Period, ca. 120,000 to 40,000 years old. A handsome pale beige chert biface, a stone tool made by Homo neanderthalensis, used as a hand axe. The tool is sizable, with a nice shape that neatly fits a large hand. Tools like this one were produced in Europe by Neanderthals, but in North Africa and the ancient Near East, anatomically modern humans produced very similar tools. This is an exceptional example with a clear form, made from a beautiful piece of chert. Size: 2.6" W x 5.95" H (6.6 cm x 15.1 cm)
