Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A bichrome Moche stirrup vessel, boasting boldly dramatic iconography painted in red on a beige ground. Here we see two renderings of the god Ai Apec, one on each side of the vessel. Ai Apec was a god of the underworld, infamous for taking on many identities as a result of his dramatic transformations. In this example he has assumed the form of a sea monster, possessing both fish-like features and more abstract characteristics. Remarkable artistry, rich iconography, impeccable technique! Size: 9-3/4" x 5-3/4" at widest. Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Belaire, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110031
