Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, ca. 500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery portrait vessel showing an amicable visage whose smile stretches across the face. The countenance consists of generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy brows, a prominent aquiline nose with flared nostrils, bulging cheeks above deep nasolabial folds, and a pointed chin with a labret piercing above a cream-striped neck band. The amusing portrait protrudes beneath a domed coiffure, and on top is a flared spout with a thick rim. Size: 5.125" W x 7.1" H (13 cm x 18 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and spalls commensurate with age, with fading to pigment, light earthen deposits within body and within some recessed exterior areas, and softening to some finer facial details. Nice preservation to most facial details.
