Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV to Phase V, ca. 500 to 850 CE. A playable pottery whistle boasting the dynamic relief of a heavily-adorned Moche warrior striding left. With a square shield strapped to his right arm, the ancient figure dramatically thrusts his staff upward with both hands whilst simultaneously gazing outward at the viewer; his visage displaying beady eyes above a broad nose, a straight mouth, and a tightly set jaw. His elaborate dress is comprised of a sizeable, semicircular headdress, huge, annular earspools, a flowing scarf, and a tunic. Note the liberal remains of white pigment enveloping the finial of his staff and the prominent cone that rises from his verso, forming the mouthpiece of the whistle. Size: 3" L x 3.2" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 8.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

  • Condition: Still functions as a whistle. Loss of proper right foot and light restoration to small areas of right leg, left foot, and staff finial. Minor chipping to nose, chin, and peripheries, as well as some minute nicks and abrasion, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with incredibly preserved detail and nice manganese deposits.
