Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, ca. 200 to 700 CE. A fascinating vessel in the form of a zoomorphic head - perhaps representing a shaman in the act of transformation! The curious jar presents a contorted countenance crowned by a tall, flared spout. Sitting upon a planar base, the stylized creature displays 1 almond-shaped eye and 1 target motif eye, as well as a protruding snout with a rounded nose, and an open mouth revealing several pointed teeth. Prominent striations line the animal's head, surrounded the central features of the face. Size: 6.1" W x 8.7" H (15.5 cm x 22.1 cm)

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection; ex-Stein collection, before 2000
