Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, Moche I period, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A gorgeously preserved stirrup vessel from the earliest stages of the Moche civilization. Mold made, it has a round, squat body with a perfectly symmetrical stirrup handle and short, tapering spout with a thick rim. The body is decorated with round sun-like motifs. What was a vessel like this one used for? Although they definitely had a funerary purpose, many have signs of wear or abrasion, suggesting that they were used for some time period before they were placed in the grave. Recently, excavations of domestic areas have found similar vessels - so they were used in everyday life as well. Size: 5.1" W x 6.65" H (13 cm x 16.9 cm)
