Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Loma Negra, Moche, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A very fine copper votive mace head of a recognizably avian form. Each side of the mace depicts an owl with recessed eyes, a protruding beak, and a cylindrical socketing shaft in the center. Owls were revered by the Moche as the ones who carried the sun across the night sky so it would rise in the morning. Size: 2.7" L x 2.1" W x 1.875" H (6.9 cm x 5.3 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection Germany, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
