Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche culture, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A large mold-made figural vessel of a lord or shaman wearing a cape while holding both hands to his chest - the right grasping an object resembling a sharpened bone knife or tool. The rest of the relief surface is painted with white and black hues, highlighting his tattoos or body paint, ear spools and a zoomorphic headdress projecting from his brow. Bones usually supplied by alpaca or llamas were carved into ritualistic blades or spatulates - the later may have been used for extracting lime and partaking in the preparation and consuming of hallucinogenic substances. It is very likely this vessel depicts an important person engaged in such a ritual! Size: 8" L x 5" W x 13.25" H (20.3 cm x 12.7 cm x 33.7 cm)
