Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche culture, Phase II/III, ca. 100-550 CE. The Mochica are highly regarded for their ceramic art, in particular their figural stirrup vessels painted in bichrome or polychrome finishes representing humans engaged in various activities. Here we have a representation of a seated male figure with hands placed upon raised knees, dressed in a voluminous tunic decorated with a geometric, step-like design in painted in red pigment on cream ground. The figure projects a solemn expression perhaps indicating he is engaged in prayer or ritualistic ceremony. 8-1/2"H x 7-1/2"D x 5-1/2"W
