Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV to V, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel with a relatively spherical body displaying abstract creatures across the exterior surfaces, perhaps an unusual version of a mythical beast known as the Strombus Monster. The vessel presents with a ring-form base, a large body with a gently rounded shoulder, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a cylindrical spout with a minimal amount of tapering towards the rim. Russet red pigment is applied atop the creamy yellow ground to form 5 of the abstract, feline-headed creatures, each with serpentine bodies and a spire mollusk shell attached to the back, and each crawling beneath branching tendrils reminiscent of tree roots. A pair of abstract curvilinear and geometric motifs graces the sides of the handle, and the foot exterior is covered in red pigment. Size: 6.05" Diameter x 11.875" H (15.4 cm x 30.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected 1970 to 2008
