Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mixtec, Oaxaca, Mexico, ca. 900-1200 CE. This attractive Mixtec polychrome tripod bowl was painted by an ancient artisan who clearly possessed an imaginative eye. The exterior is painted in shades of red, orange, brown, and cream slip. The composition is organized into registers decorated with Mixtec Codex style design - geometric forms that conjure images from the natural world - orbs of the sun, rain drops, and stylized flora. Even the feet are playfully highlighted with vibrant red accents. The overall form was meticulously handbuilt; note the subtle narrowing of this delicate corsetted form that seems to float on its dainty legs. 3-1/2"H x 4"D
