Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A cast bronze statuette depicting the bearded Olympian god Bacchus (Greek Dionysos or Dionysus) - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre - nude save the grape wreath on his head and the panther skin draped over his left arm, standing with his left leg bent at the knee - perhaps indicating his tipsy state, holding a vessel in his right hand. This piece is an early portrayal of Bacchus, as it shows him with a full beard; in the 2nd century CE, Roman artists started depicting Bacchus as a youth with a smooth face. The cult of Bacchus was immensely popular, signifying the freedom created by wine, music, and ecstatic dance. Apparently, the Romans knew how to enjoy themselves! Size: 1.25" W x 2.3" H (3.2 cm x 5.8 cm)
