Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador or Colombia, Narino, ca. 600 to 1600 CE. A stunning miniature gold monkey bead or pendant - perhaps all the more precious for the detail packed into such a diminutive size! Crafted seated holding a shell or fruit with both hands in front of his head, having a spiral form tail and large ears with perforated ear lobes. The hollow body is pierced for suspension. Monkeys that seem to mirror and, at times, parody humans - understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural.
