Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A wonderful pottery female figure known as a cuchimilco, or "star-gazer," depicted standing atop straight legs with thick arms raised and spread outward. Her huge head towers to a flared top pierced with a horizontal row of 4 drill holes, as her expressive visage displays bulging, ovoid eyes with heavy lids, a triangular nose, a petite mouth, prominent nasolabial folds, and a pointed chin, all flanked by a pair of concave ears. Raised breasts and delineated genitalia indicate her sex, while her hollow body is enveloped in creamy white pigment with black-painted striations detailing her clothing and face. Size: 5.3" W x 6.9" H (13.5 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hidden Valley Lake, California, USA collection, acquired 2010; ex-Bermudez Laurent Primitive Art, Berkeley, California, USA
