Description:

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Ngaju Dayak, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful cylindrical basket formed from woven rattan with four lower corners, reinforced vertical bars and upper rim, and a pair of lengthy straps which enable the basket to be worn across the back and both shoulders. The vertical bars and rim are decorated with sections of tight weaving as well as loose weaves over thin titanium alloy sheets. Areas of red pigment across the body create a wondrous scene of linear, geometric, and figural motifs which symbolically protect the wearer while transporting the load. Size: 12.9" L x 12.625" W x 14" H (32.8 cm x 32.1 cm x 35.6 cm).
