Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Washkuk region, Kwoma peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-built pottery head with openwork mouth and eyes, a prominent nose with a pierced septum meant to hold additional ornamentation, petite ears, and a circular protrusion on the verso. The neck and verso are decorated with dense abstract geometric motifs, and the pinched beard is incised with zigzagging motifs. The composition is painted with thick black pigment and is adorned with red across the lower face as well as white along the eyes, lips, nose, and forehead. Size: 6.125" W x 11.875" H (15.6 cm x 30.2 cm).

  • Condition: Repair to area of neck and base, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small loss to top of circular protrusion as shown. Minor abrasions and nicks to neck, head, and face, with fading to original pigmentation, a few stable fissures, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout.
