Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid-20th century CE. An enormous woven reed figure of a cassowary, one of the most dangerous birds in all of Papua New Guinea. The feathered figure boasts a rotund body atop a pair of four-toed feet, has a slender cylindrical neck, and an ovoid head with nutshell eyes and a protruding beak. The bird is painted with thick layers of yellow, red, white, and brown pigment to give it the appearance of having colorful feathers; in reality, the cassowary has almost solely dark-brown feathers on its body. Size: 34.75" L x 14" W x 31.8" H (88.3 cm x 35.6 cm x 80.8 cm).
