Description:

North America, United States, probably California, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wonderful surfboard that evokes thoughts of riding ocean currents and streaming through barrel waves. The elongated ovoid board has a hollow body composed of slightly convex wooden sheets, a slender midsection reinforced with dozens of petite iron nails, and a crescent-shaped fin beneath the planar tail. The hollow design decreases the overall weight of the board and enables the rider to float, balance, and maneuver with ease. The beautifully finished hardwood exhibits lustrous caramel and coffee hues that brings out the natural graining. Size: 110" L x 22" W (279.4 cm x 55.9 cm).

Wooden surfboards were originally made from very heavy hardwoods such as Wili Wili, Cedar, or Redwood. Craftsmen were passionate about finding the ideal design to create a better board - making changes to the size, weight, shape, the materials, the fins, etcetera in order to ride the perfect wave! This surfboard is a very early example, definitely made from a weighty hardwood, presenting a sleek design and an attractive finish. Perfect for any collector who is fascinated by the history of sports!
