Description:

North America, USA, ca. early 20th century CE. A well preserved wooden propeller with 8 bolt holes. Around the hub, it bears the inscription: "PLANE S4C STANDING PPM 1210 ENG LE RHOKE PART NO 13GS1 PAP NO 34364". This indicates that the propeller came from a Thomas-Morse S4C Scout training plane, hand built during World War I. These planes were popular single-seaters used to train American pilots - they called them the "Tommy". The plane was essentially the American version of the British Sopwith Camel, and around 600 were built. After the war, private pilots flew the Scouts, and some even appear in Hollywood films. Today, approximately a dozen survive that are flyable. Size: 7.8" W x 79.5" H (19.8 cm x 201.9 cm)

See a fascinating description of the rotary engine of the Thomas-Morse S-4 in Hemmings Daily by Daniel Beaudry, September 11, 2018, "Rising star: The rotary engine of the Thomas-Morse S-4".

  • Condition: Rich patina on the wood. Light wear on the surface commensurate with age including a few small chips, nicks, and scratches, but overall in very nice condition. The serial number stamped on the hub is generally readable with some scoring that makes a few of the characters questionable.
