Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large and wearable mask, hand-carved from a dark-brown wood, with several perforations around the peripheries for suspension or to attach a larger textile costume. The face is comprised of ovoid eyes, a prominent nose, semicircular ears, slender cheeks, an enormous forehead, and a pair of forward-facing horns, perhaps representative of a goat or smaller-horned ungulate. The projecting mandible articulates freely and is suspended by two thin, knotted reed strands. Covered in a lustrous brown patina, this is a wonderful example from the Ogoni! Size: 11.5" H (29.2 cm).

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
