Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, Himalayan, ca. mid 19th century CE. A striking wooden festival mask, hand-carved with bulging eyes, a snub nose, stylized ears, and an open mouth displaying large, pointed canine teeth. Each ear has a pair of perforations for suspension. A third eye rests in-between a pair of flaming eye brows, and the entire mask is painted with a lustrous espresso-hued color. The wrathful face on this mask is perhaps a simplified depiction of Mahakala, the tantric figure known as the "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of all things, and is therefore symbolically-associated with death. Size: 5.625" W x 5.125" H (14.3 cm x 13 cm).
