Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Tzintzuntzan, Michoacan, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Some of the finest indigenous pottery of Mesoamerica comes from the Michoacan artisans. This vessel was expertly hand built. An elegant form, this round-bottomed terracotta vessel has a stirrup handle and a long, curved spout. Most impressive is the decorative program, a polychrome pattern of geometrics organized in multiple registers and continuing all the way to the underside of the piece, painted in black, white, red and orange. This particular vessel comes from Tzintzuntzan, a name which comes from the P'urhépecha language, meaning "place of the hummingbirds". The P'urhépecha had a god named Tzintzuuquixu, meaning "hummingbird of the south", which, like the Mexica to Tenochtitlan, was involved in guiding the tribe to the Lake Pátzcuaro area. Size: 6-3/4"W (17.15 cm) x 6-1/2"H (16.5 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
