Description:

Native American, Western United States, Northern California, Paiute / Karuk / Whilkut, ca. mid-20th century CE; First Nations, Eastern Canada / Great Lakes, Mi'kmaq or Ojibwe, ca. mid-20th century CE. A twined basketry jar made from native grasses, ferns, or other plants from Northern California, and a small, lidded box, made from birch bark covered in porcupine quills. Holes were punched into the bark foundation for threading the quills through, and the maple leaf lid suggests this may have been sold as a Canadian memento. Size of larger basket: 6" Diameter x 6" H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
