Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guerrero/Mezcala, ca. 100 CE. This is a carved green stone standing anthropomorphic figure with deep cuts made to delineate the head, torso, and legs; it also has holes for eyes beneath a carved, glowering brow, a gently rising nose, and another hole for the mouth. In Olmec culture, of which the Mezcala people of Guerrero were part, green stone was more valuable than gold. This axe head would have been used for ceremonial purposes. Size: 2.75" W x 7.2" H (7 cm x 18.3 cm).

Provenance: ex-Collection of Professor Peter Arnovick, PhD, Menlo Park, CA
