Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A greenstone pectoral, carved on one side to have a sun-like motif. Lines radiate from a deeply incised central circle. On opposite sides from each other, the artist has drilled two perforations for suspension. Greenstone was a sacred material for the people of this culture, and despite its hard nature, they carved it into a variety of interesting shapes. This pectoral may have been worn in life by someone of high status before being placed into their grave. Size: 5.7" W x 5.15" H (14.5 cm x 13.1 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired over twenty years ago
