Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A pretty, rare form of greenstone pendant from this culture, which is famous for its abstract greenstone carvings. Using drills and strings to cut their way through hard rock, an artist or artists created a snake in a figure eight form, his head resting over his tail. Greenstone was more valuable than gold in Mesoamerica during this time, and this pendant would have been a valuable item, perhaps buried with its owner, an important person, to mark their passing and give them identity in the grave. Size: 1.65" W x 3" H (4.2 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired thirty years ago
