Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guerrero, Mexico, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. Anthropomorphic axe god of the M-10 figural variant, carved from a pale green andesite stone with minimally incised, stylized facial features, squared jaw and shoulders and characteristically stylized limbs with arms held over abdominal region. The Mezcala specialized in abstracting human physiognomy using string-cut technology and saying so much through line and volume. Perhaps the largest and one of the finest examples we have seen! Just under 12"H (30.5 cm) x 4-1/2"W (11.5 cm) x 2-1/4" in diameter (5.75 cm). Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #102388
