Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wearable Yalalag cross strung on a strand made from spherical hollow silver beads linked together, with devotional / saint medallions dangling along the length. Nearly the entire piece is crafted from silver with a purity of 60% to 80%. The cross and dangling pendants feature a flechas or arrow motif. The Yalalag cross is a distinctive Christian pendant originating from Yalalag, Oaxaca. Traditionally crafted from coin silver or brass, these crosses are adorned with hanging medals or pendants, sometimes larger than the cross itself, and often feature milagro motifs. Women typically wear them with strings of beads or complementary decorations. First made during the 16th century, these crosses reflect a blend of Spanish and indigenous styles, influenced by Dominican missionaries during Spanish colonization. Size of strand: 42" L (106.7 cm); cross pendant w/ attached dangle: 5.75" L x 2.5" W (14.6 cm x 6.4 cm); silver quality: 60% to 80%; weight: 151 grams
