Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fabulous sterling silver snake pendant featuring a faceted topaz. The serpent's mouth is open, and its forked tongue articulates up and down! The pendant is suspended from a sterling silver rope chain; however, the push tab on the clasp is broken, so the clasp does not function and will need to be repaired for wearability. The pendant represents Quetzalcoatl, the mythical feathered serpent deity from ancient Mesoamerican cultures, primarily associated with the Aztecs. In the Nahuatl language, Quetzalcoatl means "Feathered Serpent," and the serrated, spiked neck symbolizes his plumes. Revered as the god of wind, rain, and the creator of humanity, Quetzalcoatl continues to hold cultural significance in modern Mexico as a symbol of national identity, spirituality, and the country's indigenous heritage. Size of pendant: 1.6" L x 1.5" W (4.1 cm x 3.8 cm); chain doubled: 22" L (55.9 cm); silver quality: 93%; total weight: 36.7 grams.
