Description:

Ancient Western North America, Mesozoic era, ca. 252 to 66 million years ago. This is a superb and lovely pair of fossilized dinosaur bones that have undergone an amazing transformation - not just turning to stone but into colorful agate! The 2 slaps are from a single vertebra, sliced in half to show the interior which is highly polished to highlight the amazing coloration and membrane structures that have been preserved, frozen in dark purple, mauve, and mottled black hues. Silica based permineralization will sometimes result in this stunning bone to agate - a rare type of fossilization that is truly beautiful! The orientation on the stand is likely how the bone was angled along the spine, the wide lobed lower body, and the upper end with the white central disc was once the hole for the spinal cord, now infilled with opaque, white quartzite. Size: 5" L x 3" W x 9" H (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm x 22.9 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
