Description:

North America, Wyoming, Lincoln County, Green River Formation, Eocene Period, ca. 56 to 33 million years ago. A fossilized fish, Phareodus encaustus, in a limestone matrix with great preservation to both bones and soft tissue. This was a predatory freshwater fish, and the teeth on this specimen are on full display in the slightly parted mouth - tiny needles for feeding upon smaller species, like prehistoric Knightia. The spine, operculum gill cover, and pectoral fin are slightly raised above the rest of the fossil, the caramel hues contrasting well with the lighter matrix. Size: 5" L x 0.75" W x 7" H (12.7 cm x 1.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
