Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer or Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A mold-formed terracotta plaque of rectangular form depicting a pair of dueling warriors. Each figure presents wearing armor and cube-form helmets, with the figure on the right holding his fists in a defensive posture while the figure on the left appears to brandish a lengthy bladed weapon. Pottery plaques are one of the lasting art forms from ancient Mesopotamia, and give us a mysterious glimpse into religious practices and what people valued; they were often kept in the home, perhaps on a personal altar. Size: 4.9" W x 4.1" H (12.4 cm x 10.4 cm); 4.3" H (10.9 cm) on included custom stand.
